Sweet Dreams

sometimes –

   in the sweet sly moments
   before sleep
   steals in on scuffed feet

   in the gauzy shadows
   between dream
   and memory –

I see our history

innocent as spring kittens
fresh as summer peaches

chasing through the house
on the heels of laughter

parading outdoors
under the pregnant sun

tiptoeing through
dog-eared singsong afternoons

skipping stones
trading secrets
and sneaking candy
out of the copper frog

sometimes –

   if the stars are clever
   and the moon hangs sideways,
   like crooked wishes
or cookies turned inside out –

I dream of
pigtails and bubblegum
dandelion days
and the warm weight of
my sisters’ hands in mine
